Project Restart

On Monday morning, a Premier League video conference involving all 20 clubs, came to the agreement that team training with no contact can resume from 19th May.

Mid June is still thought of as the earliest date that Premier League matches can resume, should all go well between now and then.

Those matches will be behind closed doors, although the government has backed a proposal that 3pm games be free to air (across different platforms), to encourage people to stay away from the stadiums on matchday.

Another take-away from the meeting is that the league plans to test players for COVID-19 at least twice a week.

German Bundesliga

While we patiently wait for football to return in this country, the German Bundesliga must have had record TV audiences this week. Welcome news for the hardcores who stuck with the Belasusian league just to get a hit of football - there are now some more familiar teams and players on show!

A report on how the Bundesliga handled the return is below, and perhaps lessons we can learn is below:

Football is back, albeit of the German persuasion...But who to support??!

If you haven't chosen a German team to adopt yet, we've got you covered!!

Follow the link below for a breakdown of how the league stands:

jadon-sancho-borussia-dortmund-bayern-munich.jpg

But we thought we'd do things a little differently - choosing you favouite team by their nickname - some traditional, some familiar, and some absolute pearlers!!

Challengers for the title:

Bayern Munich - 'FC Hollywood'

World-renowned players, a rich history, and a quirky nickname, they tick all the boxes

Borussia Dortmund - 'BVB', or 'The Black and Yellows'

Famous for their alternative fans and exciting attacking playing style, the same cannot be said for their nickname

Borussia Monchengladbach - The Foals (young horses)

A bit of a mouthful, this is why nicknames were created in the first place!

Named the foals due to historically being a young, energetic, and agressively attacking team

RB Leipzig - The Red Bulls

They are roundly hated by many in Germany due to being the only club not majoritively fan-owned, boasting their company name at the forefront, and only having been formed in 2009. If this wasn't reason enough to support them, RB Leipzig are definitely a team to watch, with some very exciting youngsters. They take their nickname from their sponsor.

Europa League positions:

Bayer Leverkusen - 'The Eleven' (of the company), or 'The Factory Eleven'

Bayer have unddergone a bit of a resurgence in recent years and are once again a regular in European competition, with some very exciting young players. The nickname refers to 11 people from the Bayer, the pharmaceutical company, who started the team.

Wolfsburg - 'Wolves'

Our word 'wolf', having come from the German word and having the same meaning, this was an obvious one.

Another team who boast some good young talent.

Fun fact: they were once managed by a manager called Wolfgang Wolf. A marketing dream.

Some other interesting nicknames:

- 1. FC Koln - 'The Billy Goats'

- 1.FSV Mainz 05 - 'The O-fives'

- FC Augsburg - 'The residents of Fugger city'

- SC Freiburg - The Brasilians of Breisgau'

- Hertha Berlin - 'The Old Lady'

- 1 FC Union Berlin - 'The Iron Ones'

Lower down the leagues:

- Alemannia Aachen - 'Potato Beetles'

- Eintracht Franfurt - 'The Eagles', or, 'Temperamental Diva'

- FC Ingolstadt 04 - 'The Fortress Guards'

- FC St. Pauli - 'The Pirates'

- Hamburger SC - 'The Dinosaurs'

Let your imaginations run wild on how each club got it's nickname...

We might well revisit this topic, as there are some absolute blinders across Europe...
